Deployment
Event
On March 4 and March 5, 2000, a joint exercise was conducted
between the Dayton DMAT and elements of the 445th Air Mobility Wing at
Wright Patterson Air force Base.
Deployed
Members
The event brought together some 250 Air force personnel
and 30 DMAT members, of which, 4 KY-1 and 2 OH-1 DMAT members had
also joined us for the weekend. The event included training and a
simulated NDMS patient air transfer drill.
Deployment
History
The first day was used in classroom and hands on training.
Classes in field living, litter bearing, communications, logistics and
other topics were given.
That night, DMAT set up sleeping quarters in one of the
buildings on the base. Our logistics crew made supper of salad, spaghetti,
and bread while politely stepping around the "extra" help that kept showing
up. A lot of credit must be given the Logistics group for their adaptability
due to external problems that cropped up with the food supply. The
evening was spent in talking, naps, and relaxation.
The second day dawned clear and warm. Breakfast
of gravy on buns, fruit, drinks and eggs hit the spot. This
day was used for training and a four hour drill in which 4 aircraft were
loaded with a combination of ambulatory and non ambulatory patients.
Two of these C-141 aircraft were actually sent airborne, landed then were
off-loaded.

Working with the 445th and medical transport elements
was a pleasure.

Another view of the C-141 and VA am-bus.
The combined Air Force and DMAT staging crew off-loads
patients from a C-141 then transfers them to an awaiting ambulance bus
for transport to a field hospital.
Overhead loading of the victims into the back of our ambulance
bus is a coordinated effort of the joint team members.
The victims are then transported to the field hospital
where more USAF and DMAT await to care for them. The bus holds 8
litters and 12 walk-on patients.
